Life jackets
Life jackets (or armbands) are mandatory regulatory equipment for a boat: life jackets ensure the constant buoyancy of a person in the water by keeping the head and airways (nose, mouth) out of the water. Regulations do not require the wearing of a lifejacket, however, common sense and certain situations make the wearing of a lifejacket essential:
- sailing in winter or in cold waters
- night sailing
- sailing in bad weather
- use ofdinghies
- activities on board that require leaning over the side(fishing in particular)
- children on board (including at anchor) and people who cannot swim
- practice of certain nautical activities (water skiing, ski bus, dinghy, ...) which require at least one buoyancy aid vest.
Today, the development of inflatable life jackets, which are light and do not interfere with maneuvers, encourages many boaters to wear them systematically while sailing. As a skipper, you are responsible for ensuring that the life jackets on board meet the required standards, that they are in good condition to perform their function and that they are adapted to the morphology of the crew members on board (including children).

BUOYANCY AID VESTS FOR WATER SPORTS
The buoyancy aid vests are mandatory in protected waters and in basic areas (less than 2 miles from a shelter) and for nautical activities such as windsurfing, jet-skiing, sea kayaking, water-skiing, light sailing, etc... They ensure that the respiratory tract is kept out of the water for a conscious wearer and require the ability to swim. They are 50 newtons buoyancy armbands that correspond to the ISO/EN 12402-5 standard.
ARMBANDS AND FOAM VESTS
There are many different types of vests. Among the models, the foam vests which can be manually or automatically activated, provide the greatest buoyancy. These vests must comply with ISO/EN 12402 standards to be used on French boats and their buoyancy capacities (100 / 150 or 275 newtons) determine the distance to which one can move away from a shelter.
Inflatable life jackets
The advantage of using an inflatable life jacket over foam life jackets is that it is not bulky and is easy for crew members to wear. Depending on your practice and your preferences, many models of inflatable lifejackets are available: automatic inflatable lifejackets which are the most common at Plastimo, Crewsaver or Spinlock like the Deskvest 6D 170 N UML, hydrostatic lifejackets which are triggered by water pressure like the Deskvest Vito 170 N and finally lifejackets with automatic inflation but with manual release for the EVO 165 lifejacket
Life jackets for children
It should be noted that children's lifejackets have specific standards to take into account their morphology and the great variation in weight and size according to age. The first thing to know about children's life jackets is that they must have a minimum buoyancy of 100 Newtons, whatever the type of navigation envisaged and the distance from a shelter. Their manufacture is also different: we take into account the morphological aspects of the child, for example a head larger than that of the adult compared to the rest of the body, which means that the buoyancy of the head is often more important. The subcutaneous strap that passes between the legs is also a mandatory element of the child's vest and there is a "handle" on the back to help pull the child aboard. Children's lifejackets are often foam lifejackets sometimes decorated with "funny" drawings like the Typhoon Junior lifejacket from Plastimo but you can also find inflatable lifejackets for children like the Jumpy lifejacket from 4Water or the Deskvest Cento lifejacket from Spinlock.
Accessories for lifejackets
The wearing of life jackets is already a great step forward in the safety of water activities. However, nowadays, it is necessary to equip these lifejackets withaccessories in order to maximize the chances of survival and to be spotted by the rescue means. Thus, we prefer vests with an integrated safety harness such as the Spinlock models like the Deckvest 170 Lite + or the Pro Solas 180 N vest from Plastimo. With this type of vest, it will be necessary to provide a 2 or 3 point lanyard to attach to the life line on the boat. You should also think about equipping the vest with a luminous means of identification which is essential to be well identified: it could be a small flash light which is attached to the vest like the Plastimo automatic led flash light or simple luminous sticks which must be triggered by "breaking" it and which are very visible, especially at night. Other accessories can be useful like the anti-brown mask.
