COURSE OR SURVEY COMPASSES
The compass is one of the essential instruments in maritime navigation. It is even compulsory on board as soon as you are more than 2 miles from a shelter (Division 240). In recreational boating, there are two main types of magnetic compasses: the course compass which is most often mounted on the boat near the steering position and the bearing compass which is mainly used to measure an angle to a landmark or another boat. The location of the course compass must be chosen carefully to minimise the magnetic influence of the boat on the readings.
