What is Division 240?
Division 240 is the official text that regulates the conditions of use and the safety equipment that must be carried on board boats and pleasure craft. One of the important notions of this text is that of the shelter because the safety equipment that it is necessary to embark will depend on the distance from a shelter. Moreover, some boats, even those with a lot of equipment, cannot go beyond a certain distance from a shelter: for example, a sea kayak cannot go further than 6 nautical miles from a shelter and only under certain conditions. <p>This heavy-duty, compact lamp can be clipped onto a strap of <strong>automatic lifejacket</strong> and is triggered by contact with water in the event of a fall into the sea. The flashes generated by this flashlight are visible for several kilometers around and this for a duration of 12 hours. This significantly increases the chances of survival in the event of an accident. The extra flat dome of the lamp and the tamper-proof clip make it very resistant also during rescue operations. Can be turned off manually once triggered. Fits all types of straps (vests, wetsuits, survival suits) up to 40mm wide.</p>

Distance from a shelter according to Division 240
One of the important notions of the Division 240 is the one of the shelter because the safety materials that it is necessary to embark will depend on the distance of distancing from a shelter. What are these regulatory distances?
The 300 metre band
This is the coastal strip located less than 300 metres from the water's edge. The position of the 300-metre strip can therefore change depending on the tide. This zone is dedicated to beach gear and no safety equipment is required.
The Basic zone less than 2 nautical miles from a shelter
This zone allows a quick return to a harbour for example in case of a sudden deterioration of the weather conditions. The safety equipment in this zone is limited to the strict necessary such as life jackets or a fire extinguisher if you have an engine. This is a dedicated area for simple watercraft such as windsurfers, kite-surfers or paddle boats.
The Coastal zone within 6 miles of a shelter
Going to this zone requires a little more safety equipment as it may take longer to return to port and the distance may require more visible or more effective means of alerting. Thus, even if the VHF is not compulsory in this zone, it is strongly advised as it is the most efficient and quickest way to give the alert. The equipment for this zone concerns a large part of the motorized pleasure boats and small inhabitable sailing boats but there are also adaptations for sea scooters and certain kayaks.
The Semi-Homeless zone within 60 miles of a shelter
This zone concerns all those who want to venture out to sea, to attempt small crossings like the Channel or Corsica. The need for equipment becomes much more important because the intervention of the rescue services can take time, hence the obligation to take a life raft for example. Only motorboats and habitable sailing boats are concerned.
The offshore zone for unlimited navigation
This involves having additional equipment that is essential for long crossings such as a transatlantic or transmed: an adapted life raft, an emergency beacon and a portable waterproof VHF are part of the offshore equipment.
