Boating licence

WHEN IS A BOATING LICENCE REQUIRED?
A boating licence is necessary to drive a motorboat of more than 6 hp, whether at sea or inland. It should be noted that this obligation is not necessary for a sailboat, even one equipped with a motor, but it is strongly recommended that you take it because 95% of the programme also concerns sailing.
BOAT LICENCE TO GO TO SEA
There are 2 levels of the boat licence depending on the navigation area and the distance from a shelter:
- To sail at sea within 6 miles of a shelter, you will have to pass the coastal licence. To obtain this licence, you must pass a 30-question code test and follow a practical training course in an official boat school.
- To go beyond 6 miles from a shelter, you must pass the offshore extension (often called the "offshore licence") which is a 1.5 hour test based on navigation exercises and tidal calculations.
BOATING LICENCE FOR INLAND WATERS
Here again, there are 2 levels of boat licence, this time depending on the size of the boat:
- The "Inland Waters" licence allows you to drive boats up to 20 metres in length on inland waters only (rivers, canals and lakes). It is obtained in the same way as the coastal licence, but if you already hold the latter, only the code test is required.
- The " Large Inland Boating " extension allows you to drive boats of more than 20 metres. You must follow a practical training course in an official boat school.
It should be noted that to navigate on closed lakes such as Lake Geneva, a coastal licence may be enough.
RESTRICTED RADIOTELEPHONE OPERATOR'S CERTIFICATE ( RRC)
The CRR is required to use a VHF and the various communication devices on board in non-French waters, such as international waters which start 12 miles from the coast.
