Longe côte, a physical exercise in connection with nature

Longe côte is a new sport practice which is practiced on the long sandy beaches of the Channel and the Atlantic. The principle is to walk along the coast, half immersed in the water, with or without a paddle, thus allowing to work all the muscles of the body while walking along the coast. Alone or in a group, this exercise is accessible to all levels to build muscles and keep fit while discovering the beaches in the off-season in a different light.

What equipment do I need to walk in the water?

Depending on the time of year you practice this exercise, the range of equipment needed for longe côte may vary. When the water is below 18 degrees and depending on the chilliness of the "Longeur", the equipment of a neoprene suit is part of the basic equipment. In mid-season, or even in winter, and especially when the wind and the rain start to come, you will have to add accessories such as neoprene gloves, neoprene caps, neoprene hoods and neoprene shoes

  1. The wetsuit : Choose according to your practice

5.3, 4.2, 3.2 ? These figures presented for aqua-walking websuits represent the thickness of the neoprene which constitutes it. The first number is for the thickness of the neoprene on the torso and back (areas with a high need for warmth), the second number for the thickness of the neoprene on the arms and legs, where there is a need for mobility and ergonomics. The thicker the neoprene, the warmer it is. For the longe côte in sleeve and in Atlantic from October it is strongly advised to choose a full wetsuit in 5.3 mm. A shorty (short sleeves and shorts) will only be suitable for practice between June and September. The Combi 5.3 will allow you to cover long-distance trips from September to June. From December to March, it is advisable to double the suit with head/foot/hand accessories and warm under layers.

  2. The accessories of the longe côte : Boots are mandatory, gloves and headband are optional

If booties are essential to protect you from shells and rocks as well as to keep your feet warm, hand and head protection are optional and depend on the weather and water temperature. The practice of the longe côte being carried out by all the weather conditions, it is advisable to be equipped mid season of gloves neoprene as well as of a cap neoprene, headband neoprene or balaclava neoprene. During outings in very cold weather it is also possible to add special warm under-layers to put under a neoprene suit.

How to maintain my longe côte equipment ?

A golden rule to respect in any case: rinse all your equipment with clear water (not salted) and let it dry before storing.

Secondly, most tears or damage to lanyard equipment occur when putting on or taking off the equipment. Take your time! The wetsuit is a fragile piece of equipment, so removal after a lunging session should not be rushed but methodical. Never remove the wetsuit on rocks or gravel, as walking through the wetsuit can cause micro-cuts in the neoprene which can lead to more serious tears.

Once in a while it is advisable to clean the neoprene suit with an antibacterial product which will eliminate odours and any risk of mould.
