Smock tops
The sailing top is the marine clothing specifically adapted to intensive practices. Depending on the sailing programme, there are three types of jacket: those designed for offshore sailing, those designed for regattas and dinghy and those designed specifically for fishing.
THE OFFSHORE SMOCK
The offshore smock has a high collar combined with a technical membrane, such as GORE-TEX, with the essential yellow hood for safety at sea. The Musto or Helly Hansen ranges are perfect examples of products adapted to this programme. The offshore smock is the ultimate protection against the most extreme conditions. Most of them are made with a perfectly waterproof and breathable membrane such as Gore Tex. They protect the sailor from the cold, from water and ensure excellent breathability and therefore evacuation of perspiration and body moisture in active conditions. These jackets are to be completed in the 3 layer system by a warm second layer (fleece or primaloft) and a first layer of technical underwear evacuating perspiration. Picksea has selected for you among the best brands such as Guy Cotten, Musto, Zhik, Helly Hansen, etc.
THE SMOCK FOR REGATTA AND DINGHY SAILING
For regattas, it is necessary to wear ultra light and tight fitting jackets, for a good manoeuvrability. They often have a neoprene collar, with velcro to minimise water ingress. Among these smocks, the Guy Cotten Naruto or the Zhik Aeroshell Smock are made of a membrane for good waterproofing and breathing. Finally, there are Tops, with a coating rather than a membrane glued to the fabric. These jackets are fitted and worn over lycra to cut the wind: like the Magic Marine Spraytop for example.
THE SMOCK FOR SEA FISHING
Finally, there is a range of tops specifically designed for sea or shore fishing with a specific cut to ensure ample movement when fishing. The Breton manufacturer Guy Cotten in particular has specialised in this type of jacket, with the Top Efficient and Surf Confort among the brand's best-sellers.
